Many of us, mom entrepreneurs here are in Direct Sales or Network Marketing business. (There may be some who are small business owners. but still will apply, in my opinion.) because network marketing is the easiest and cheapest way to get a business going. You don’t need to create any products or marketing materials or even websites, almost all companies provide these for you to make it easy on you. Network marketing business is a great starter and entry to start your own business.
In fact, I’m in one, I love the company and their fabulous products. For a long time, that’s what I promoted. That’s how I was trained too. There are so many great trainers and training contents I cannot take them all!
The problem is that there are MANY many other reps in my company selling the same things. There are many other network marketing companies out there too, selling health and wellness products, beauty products, cooking and household products, jewelry & accessories, clothes, you name it, you can probably find it through network marketing. And they all say, “Our products are the BEST!” Of course, they are. 🙂
This competition is here and here to stay, no matter what company you represent.
So what’s the difference? Why would a person buy from you and not the other?
Have you had a time when you approach someone, this person says “so sorry but my sister sells the same thing, I buy from her.” ? I have. I don’t blame them, I would do the same because she’s a family. You’d want to support a family, right? Same goes to good friends, they’d want to support you and buy from you because they like you and trust you.
This is because people buy from people and people join people they know and trust, not the company.
This is why you want to brand yourself. The unique difference is YOU!
Here are 3 top reasons why you want to brand yourself:
Reason #1: You want to establish yourself as an expert in your area.
First and most important reason you want to brand yourself is that you want to position yourself as a leader or an expert in the industry you’re representing. Let’s say you’re selling make-up products. When you show them how to wear makeup beautifully instead of telling them “Look, my products are natural and harmless.”, people are likely to see you as an authority in makeup. That attracts more people to you.
People would trust you more because they see you sharing how you use the products to make them look good, or create a healthy lifestyle, etc instead of pushing products on them.
Reason #2: You want to be your OWN business, not the company you’re representing.
You may say, “Wait! I AM a representative of ‘such and such’ company!” Yes, it is true. BUT just think of the company as a ‘supplier’ for your own company. You want to promote your network marketing company, yes, I understand. But it is YOUR business. You want to have your own brand and let the products be products, not your brand. When you approach people from the point of giving great contents, not the products, you can create curiosity that people actually would ask you about your company.
Reason #3: Be prepared just in case the network marketing company you are with closes its doors OR you decide to switch.
So what if the company you’re with now decide to close its doors? (Remember what happened to some companies some time ago?) It could happen! No reps thought it would happen to them, but it did. In fact, several of my uplines came from a company that decided to close direct sales division of the company and those who were with them lost their income overnight! That is quite scary if you’re established in one company!
How about if you decide that you want to switch the company you’re with. You might have to start all over again. But if you’re branding yourself, you really do not need to worry about making the ‘switch’. You just continue to bring value to your audience, being your normal self.
Reason #4: Be Your authentic self
You’re different from others, that’s what makes you unique. You don’t have to do what others are doing. Do what works for YOU. When you brand yourself, you don’t have to be restricted with the rules and regulations of the network marketing company. (of course, you want to be in compliance with them but you have more leeway when you brand yourself and not mention the company upfront.)
Here are some steps you can take to determine your brand:
Step 1: Determine your strength, your passion, what you’re good at. You want to be specific in this step but not too long.
Are you an organized person? Are you friendly and can talk to anyone? Are you really good at social media marketing? Are you a strong leader? Whatever they are, write down 3- 5 strong traits you think you possess. If you can’t think of any, ask yourself, “has anyone say anything good about me lately? What did they say?” Also, ask around your trusted friends, what they think your strong characteristics are. I’m sure they will tell you some good stuff about you. It’s important to know who you are. 🙂
You can also take this quiz and determine what kind of entrepreneur you are and check if you’re in the right business.
Step 2: Determine how your strength could benefit your customers. and your team leaders or team builders.
If your strength is being friendly, good listener, and a great knowledge of products you offer, that’s what you can create your brand on. So when a person ask, “why should I buy from you?” or “why should I join your team?” Do you have an answer?
When answering, make sure you don’t compare your products to your competitors, don’t mention it at all. (I’m sure you don’t but just a friendly reminder. 😉 ). In fact, products are irrelevant. Everyone offers the same.
Your brand is YOU. What value can you offer to your audience? That’s what you need to determine.
Step 3: Define your goals and know your target audience, so you can create your message that helps you reach that goal and reach the right audience!
You can grab my Target audience and Avatar worksheet here. It’s sort of tedious process, but trust me, you want to know who you’re talking to! It makes it so much easier to create conversations if you know who you’re creating the contents for. The most important thing you want to figure out is
The most important thing you want to know is your avatar’s pain point. What is she/he struggling with? What are her/his needs? How can you (or your products) solve their pain or struggles? These are the basis for your important value contents!
Step 4: Create your brand logo, fonts, designs, and website. (Yes, website too!)
This actually is a fun process though if you have no artistic creativity, it could be a nightmare. You could do it yourself using tools like Canva.com or picmonkey.com or hire out someone to do it. I wanted to do it right, so I did hire Stephanie Hunt from The Savvy Peach and she did an awesome job. There are many others in the market, do some research and go with the designer you resonate with. As for the website, I recommend WordPress or squarespace. If you’re not tech savvy, you might go through a bit of learning curve, but it’s possible to do it yourself. If you don’t want to bother with it, hire someone to set it up for you. You can check out Fivrr.com or Upworks and see if you can find someone to do it at a reasonable price.
Oh, again, don’t forget to be a human! You are allowed to make mistakes, everyone does! Just be your authentic self. People don’t want to talk to a robot, they want to know you’re real.
ok, I think you got the idea.
